Kathmandu valley remained tense throughout the day from early morning Thursday following a protest by the locals and relatives of Ritesh Rauniyar ,15, and Ashish Manandhar, 15, whose dead bodies were recovered at Gumalchowki jungle, Thankot, in the capital on Wednesday.
Locals and relatives of the deceased took to the street demanding stern action against the culprits. The meeting of the Civil Struggle Committee, under which the protestors demonstrated, has put forth a five-point demand with the government.
The Metropolitan Police Commissioner’s Office, Ranipokhari, Thursday afternoon formed a five-member investigation committee under the chairmanship of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and chief of the Metropolitan Police Crime Division Office (MPCD) Birendra Babu Shrestha.
The demands of the struggling committee included formation of a high-level expert investigation committee, formation of judicial commission, maximum punishment to the guilty and ensuring security of every individual.
Meanwhile, responding to the queries of journalists, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Bam Dev Gautam said that the government is ready to hold talks with the civil struggle committee and that the government is committed to book the guilty very soon. Minister Gautam expressed his sorrow about the incident and urged not to take to the street. Demonstrators picketed Kalimati Police station this morning for almost 2 hours. Areas including Kalimati, Kalanki, Balkhu, Teku, Tripureshwor, Thapathali and New Road were tensed due to the protest.
Half a dozen of public as well as private vehicles were vandalised during the demonstration.
On Wednesday evening, the agitators demonstrated at Kalimati against the killing of Rauniyar and Manandhar, residents of Tahachal. Both the deceased teenagers had disappeared since November 15.
Rauniyar was the ninth grader of Wilson Academy, near Bafal and Manandhar was also a ninth grader of New Jenis Secondary School, Bhurungkhel. Both of the deceased teenagers were from Taahachal-13, Kathmandu.
Relatives of the deceased said they would not accept the dead bodies until the police investigated the killing and took action against the culprits. The postmortem of the teenagers was performed on Wednesday at TU Teaching Hospital.
Deceased Ashish’s father Shree Prasad Manandhar accused that the police ignored their appeal for searching the two boys who were missing for the last 11 days. Dead bodies of Rauniyar and Manandhar were recovered from the jungle in Gumalchowki, Thankot, Wednesday morning.
Meanwhile, transport services in Kathmandu valley were disrupted from early morning as students and relatives of the two teenagers staged protests in several places in the capital.
The protestors alleged police authorities were not serious even after the parents of Rauniyar and Manandhar reported their disappearance on November 16.
Civil struggle committee member Ram Sharan Dangol said that the committee has demanded guarantee of security for every citizen. “We are not seeking any compensation for the incident but rather urged to book the guilty into the police net and to find out the fact and truth of the incident,” Dangol said.
