UML 8th convention

CPN-UML completed preparations for its 8th convention that is due to begin in Butwal,  Monday. Security has been beefed up on the eve of the convention to be participated by the top leaders of major political parties and representatives from abroad.

General secretary of the party Jhalanath Khanal is scheduled to open the convention at 1 pm.

Convention representatives, foreign delegates and leaders from different political parties including former Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala have arrived here to take part in the convention. Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ is expected to come tomorrow. Forty representatives of 21 political parties from 14 different countries are attending the event.

“We have tightened security keeping the convention in mind,” said chief district officer Dhubaraj Wagle.

He said that 2000 security personnel have been mobilised and a number of security teams comprising 40 security personnel have been deployed on the southern areas of Kapilvastu, Nawalparasi and Rupandehi districts keeping in view the sensitivity in those places.

Vehicles that pass through the highway have been stopped from playing.

Wagle said there wouldn’t be any security problems to convention participants, in case that happened the security forces have been instructed to take action immediately.

There is coordination between the party volunteers and police force, according to Wagle.

Ishwor Pokharel, coordinator of the central publicity committee said more than 1000 volunteers would be in action on the inaugural day and about 350 on the following days.

Standing Committee member Pradeep Nepal said that efforts were underway for consensus to elect the new leadership.
